Special Tengboche Highlights

Special Tengboche Highlights- 9 nights / 10 days

Introduction:

This trek’s main highlight is the Tengboche monastery, the main cultural and religious heritage of the Sherpa people, and allows easy trekking through Everest country…

On this trek, we explore the upper Khumbu region and the culture of the Sherpa people. We begin our journey by flying into the airstrip at Lukla, and begin our trek upwards to Monjo. Namche is next on our trek, its amphitheater setting providing a perfect vantage point for lots of great views of the Himalayan mountains - Kondge Ri (Ri means mountain), Kantega, Thamserku, Kusum Kangaru, and Khumbi-ila, the protector-god mountain for the people of Khumbu.

Our main highlight is the Tengboche monastery. Built in 1919, the Tengboche monastery is a spectacular structure and a strong symbol of Sherpa Buddhist religion and culture. The monastery survived an earthquake in 1934 and a fire in 1989. With funds raised from international well-wishers and Sherpas, the present Tengboche monastery was rebuilt from scratch. There are impressive statues and frescoes of the Buddha Sakyamuni, the goddess of wisdom Manjushri, and the future Buddha, Maitreya. Tawas (monks) live in the monastery quarters and pursue an education in the Buddhist doctrine in this idyllic and peaceful setting. The Tengboche monastery is headed by the revered re-incarnate abbot, Nawang Tenzing Zangbu or simply 'Tengboche Lama.'

We welcome you to enjoy this short and relatively easy trek into Sherpa-land.
